It’s 100% just because I grew up around them, they really aren’t my kind of car. I just love pulling away from a weekend hunting, tired as hell, with a soft V8 burble and the car looking like this.

I don’t own one but probably will some day.
Nothing beats a Suburban 4X4. A lot of people can do a lot of stuff in that vehicle.

What kind of mileage do these realistically get.

My mom got one earlier this year. navy blue with blue leather interior. It’s her dream car, well other than a Bentley :P

4X4, around 15 on the highway and around 10 or 11mpg in town. I heard the 2wd were good for another mpg or two.

My friends mom usually got 12mpg in her ‘92 2wd. So, not quite 10mpg for Americans

Very good Oppo post. Cuts right to the heart of specific-vehicle love.

I used to own a 96 4X4. It was handy. My current tow vehicle is a 99 escalade. Unless you need the third row of seats, the Tahoe sized wheelbase is the way to go. It is much easier to park, tows better and is a whole lot better off road. On the GMT400 burban’s, that rear bumper is a long ways back there and that overhang kills you on any kind of technical terrain. There is a reason that even the 2wd drive suburbans came with the fuel tank skid plate as standard. The 42 gallon tank did give good range. The shorter rear overhang handles tounge weight better when towing, too.

Yeah the shorter wheelbase is way easier to drive for sure.
I would never DD the monster version. But the third row is cool for big families that like taking road trips together.

Indeed. There is a lot of cargo space behind that 3rd row.

We had one growing up. Family of 6 so we definitely used all three rows. 2 people per row meant everyone had elbow space. I really want one. I’ve seen two of these as a dually, blew my mind the first time around.

The one in the picture, my personal dream burb, is an 11th gen. I think it’s an ‘09. Matallic grey with the LTZ trim. This one can get around 20 on the highway give or take one or two mpg. It has the big 6.0 liter, but comes with cylinder deactivation. Doesn’t make much of a difference though:/

See I would still have to go with the big one. The Tahoe never really appealed to me. It just seems like a less fun suburban. The burb is just the real deal. You know what I mean?

I had an ‘01 for a few years, it was fantastic. Really nice having basically a truck but with a cap permanently mounted on it and a whole bunch of seats you could throw in when you needed them. Ironically, I sold it before having kids, and have a 3-series wagon now. Maybe in a few more years when the kids are bigger I’d get another one. Hard to beat for throwing kids, dogs, bikes, skis, and everything right inside.
